Plastic Waste Management Challenges and Difficulties

Plastic waste directly and indirectly affects living organisms throughout the ecosystem, including an increasingly high impact on marine life at a macro and micro scale. According to United Nations, almost 80% of marine debris is plastic. Policy enforcement remains weak, global manufacture of plastics continues to increase, and the quantity of plastic debris in the oceans, as well as on land, is likely to increase.

How we’ll do it

  • Reduce plastic waste in our operations and supply chain
  • Work to expand waste management systems and infrastructure, and support policy that increases the use of recycled plastics
  • Advance mechanical and molecular recycling to meet customers’ and brand owners’ environmental and circular goals

2027 Goals

  • Produce and market 2 million metric tons of recycled and renewable-based polymers annually
  • Help demonstrate successful plastic waste management in multiple cities and divert millions of tons of plastic waste through Alliance to End Plastic Waste projects
  • Unlock at least five times our investment to increase the recovery and recycling of plastic and accelerate solutions to end plastic waste
Increasing adoption of recycled plastic in various industrial processes has given an impetus to plastic waste management. As part of their sustainable strategy, major food and beverage companies have incorporated recycle plastic to manufacture new plastic bottles. For instance, The Coca-Cola Company, in July 2017, announced that it would use 50% of recycled plastic in its bottles by the end of 2020. The increasing number of overfilled landfills across the globe and ban on landfills across Europe has given an impetus to plastic waste recycling activities. Implementation of policies to promote plastic recycling by regulatory bodies across the world is anticipated to create a conducive environment for the growth of the plastic waste management sector in the forecast period. Increased government spending on plastic waste management projects and the burgeoning number of private companies venturing into the plastic waste management sector is expected to drive the overall plastic waste management industry across the globe.
